The caribou (Rangifer tarandus) has graced the Canadian 25 cent piece since 1937. Also known as the reindeer, the caribou is a deer from the Arctic and Subarctic, including both resident and migratory populations. While widespread and numerous overall, some subspecies are rare and one or two, depending on taxonomy, have become extinct.
