Gallienus Augustus 253-268AD AE Antoninianus Göbl/MIR 741 b. RIC 242 (reverse misdescribed)123 views20.2x20.8mm, 3.39g

GALLIENVS AVG

/ MERCVRIO CONS AVG
Criocamp with head of ram to right.
H below
Cohen 631. Cunetio 1389. Göbl/MIR 741 b.
RIC 242 (Hippocamp).
Sear 10289 (Hippocamp)
Hunter 118 (Hippocamp, horned)
Rare.
RIC and Sear describe the reverse of this type as a
Hippocamp to right, even though there is
an evident difference between the creature
seen on this coin with the head and hooves
of aram and the representation of a
hippocamp seen on RIC 244, Göbl/MIR 743
with NEPTVNO CONS AVG reverse. The
extensive number of “CONS AVG” coins of
Gallienus found in the Cunetio treasure
made Besly and Bland to analyze this
interesting issue (p. 188-194). It says:
“This type depicts a beast that has the
fore-part of a ram and the rear-part of a
sea-monster or serpent. It has therefore
been given the name ‘criocamp’ (from the
Greek krios = ram, kampos = sea-monster).
Only one style (fig. 9, 37) was detectable in
the Cunetio examples of this rare type.
There is no obvious connection between
this unusual creature and Mercury. However,
the ram’s head may allude to the role of
Hermes-Mercury as a fertility god. Hermes
supposed ability to increase the fertility of
sheep made him specially worshipped by
shepherds” (p. 192-193).
